Tasting Notes

Robert Parker 94-96

If I had to nominate Mugneret-Gibourg’s best grand cru, it would likely be the Clos Vougeot; but this year, it is the 2023 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru that appears to reign supreme, bursting with aromas of plums, rose petals, sweet spices and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it’s suave and fleshy, with a rich core of fruit, sinewy tannins and a saline finish. The 2023 vintage was decidedly generous at Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg, delivering fully 145 barrels of wine, the largest volume produced in the estate’s recorded history. Following on the heels of 2022, it means there’s a bit more wine to go around—though prepare for a rude awakening with 2024, the estate’s smallest ever crop. As readers will remember, the order of the day is destemmed fruit, classical macerations in cement vats and maturation in barrels sourced from Rousseau, François Frères, Cavin and Trémeaux, the latter two playing an increasingly important role, delivering wines characterized by purity and sweetness of fruit, framed by a glossy patina from their élevage that generally integrates nicely with bottle age.
