Perfumed and sumptuous, Fourrier’s 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has turned out very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums and raspberries, complemented by notions of violets, peonies and blood orange. Medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it’s suave and seamless, with succulent acids, velvety tannins and a rose-inflected finish.
Anticipated maturity: 2026-2050
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru exhibits more whole bunch character than the other four “CSJs”. Brambly red fruit, brown spices and a touch of wet limestone. This is unquestionably the most transparent of the five. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, slightly coarser tannins but so much energy and tension. Perhaps it just tapers a little towards the finish? This is very classy, yet atypical in style for Jean-Marie Fourrier. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.
Anticipated maturity: 2024-2045
