(60% new oak): Bright, dark red. Less expressive on the nose than the Ruchottes, offering ripe red fruit and toasty oak aromas lifted by a whiff of orange rind. Broad, round and suave for the year but not yet filled in; currently showing more cardamom and licorice than primary fruit. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and very good spicy persistence. This needs time in the cellar.
The 2011 Echezeaux Grand Cru has a fragrant bouquet, again quite autumnal and leafy, with lovely, ripe black fruit – blackberry, bilberry intermingling with freshly tilled soil. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline entry. There is a palpable marine influence with hints of iodine and seaweed embroidered into the structured finish. This should age extremely well over two decades. Drink 2015-2035.
Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035
