Tasting Notes

Vinous 98

Philip Togni s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is a great wine from a vintage that continues to show its profound beauty. Mind-blowing in intensity, the 2010 races across the palate with copious dark fruit mixed with hints of gravel, licorice and savory herbs. Because of Philip Togni s Bordeaux training, his Cabernet Sauvignon is often said to be Old World-leaning. That may be the case next to Napa s most flamboyant wines, but to me, the 2010 Togni is classic Napa all the way. [Antonio Galloni, 17/02/2023]

Anticipated maturity: 2022-2045

Togni’s second label, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard, is relatively accessible for the vintage. Sweet dark cherries, flowers, herbs and mocha are all woven together in the glass. Already quite juicy and supple, the 2010 is a gracious, mid-weight wine with considerable immediate appeal. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. Philip Togni, along with his wife Birgitta and daughter Lisa continue to turn out some of the most distinctive and age worthy Cabernet Sauvignons in Napa Valley. The wines are built on structure more than overt fruit, so they need a few years in bottle to come together, but when they do, they are spectacular. Sadly, this year there are no library releases, as Togni did not bottle his 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon and there isn’t enough of the 1992 for a commercial release. Togni remains a benchmark, reference point producer for Napa Valley, with pricing that is incredibly consumer friendly. www.philiptognivineyard.com [Antonio Galloni, 27/12/2012]
