Tasting Notes

Vinous 97

An explosive, captivating wine, the 2009 Futo bursts from the glass with an exotic mélange of incense, tobacco, wild flowers, licorice and plums. Full-bodied and racy, the 2009 covers every inch of the palate with stunning depth and purity. The tannins are firm and quite present, but there is so much fruit they are nearly buried. Readers will be tempted to drink the 2009 young, but my impression is that patience will be highly rewarded. This is yet another striking, totally compelling wine. [Antonio Galloni, 01/12/2012]

Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029

Robert Parker 94

The projected composition of the 2009 Futo is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. It has the potential to be as good as the 2008, but ultimately I think it will fall slightly short of both the 2008 and 2007. Dense ruby/purple-hued with aromas of black raspberries, blueberries, forest flora, licorice and lead pencil shavings, this medium-bodied effort possesses sweet, ripe tannins as well as a seamless personality. Futo’s early efforts are highly impressive and, for those who can afford them, they are well-worth getting on the winery’s mailing list. (Not yet released) Only a stone’s throw from Harlan Estate and Bond on the western hillsides of Oakville is Tom Futo’s winery. This boutique operation produces less than 1,000 cases from a 12-acre vineyard. Interestingly, a high percentage of Cabernet Franc is used in the blend. This varietal appears to be a magical component used in many wines in the Oakville Corridor. Tel. (707) 944-9333; Fax (707) 944-9334 [Robert M. Parker, Jr., 12/23/2010]
