The 2008 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru has a powerful nose with honeysuckle, beeswax, fennel, hints of acacia coming through with time. I adore the mercurial nature of this Les Charmes – the manner in which it toys with the olfactory senses. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with great intensity on the finish that is very precise. This punches well above my expectations and is drinking beautifully now.
Anticipated maturity: 2022-2032
Tasted at the IMW 2008 tasting at Vintners Hall. The Charmes ’08 has a lifted bouquet with hints of almond, white peach and dried apricot, all well defined but perhaps needing to exhibit a little more mineralite. The palate is medium-bodied with an oaky entry, good weight and tension, although I find the oak a little obtrusive towards the finish. Good length and delineation, hopefully this will gain refinement with further bottle age. Tasted March 2011.
