Compared to the 1998, the Clos l’Eglise 2001 is far more taut and linear on the nose, but with stupendous delineation and mineralite. It is so candied and floral with hints of graphite developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity: graphite-tinged black fruit, spice, kirsch and a touch of orange zest. It has great delineation and persistency on the finish. What a great Pomerol 2001 this is: an effortless combination of classic and modern. Tasted May 2012.
(a 70/15/15 blend of merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon) Red-ruby color. High-pitched aromas of raspberry and spicy oak. Sweet and fat but fresh in the mouth, with flavors of plum, smoked meat, tobacco and oak spice. Finishes with ripe, broad tannins and good persistence.
