The 2000 Beychevelle is slightly different from the other ex-chateau bottle tasted last year. This has a little more presence on the nose with peppermint-tinged red fruit, leather and camphor. Attractive, even if it is missing the typicite of the 2001. The palate is medium-bodied, and here I feel a bit of brett denudes the 2000 of delineation and the freshness it might otherwise have had. Well-knit, yet a little feral on the finish. Tasted at the Beychevelle vertical at the property.
Anticipated maturity: 2022-2034
A deep garnet core with brick rim. The nose has good intensity with blackberry, wild hedgerow, cedar and a touch of damp earth. Good delineation and focus. The palate is full-bodied with good acidity and depth, fine tannins, still quite traditional in style with a degree of austerity and glycerine that really complements this great Beychevelle that has a nice prickle on the finish. Excellent. Drink now-2020. Tasted May 2008.
Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020
