Tasted at the Denis Bachelet dinner at Quality Chop House. You know that scene in “Sleepless in Seattle” with Meg Ryan? Do I need to say more about the Charmes-Chambertin 1993? It has a stunning bouquet with intense minerals, raspberry coulis and a touch of Japanese nori that possesses an unerring sense of transparency. The palate follows up with filigree tannin – supple and sensual with breathtaking purity. Harmonious and after two decades still surfeit with energy, this 1993 Burgundy must constitute one of the wines of the vintage. God knows how Meg Ryan would react if she drank it herself.
Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035
The 1993 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the finest that Denis Bachelet made in that era. It has a crystalline bouquet with unprecedented mineralité and transparency, subtle marine scents (kelp?) percolating through the red fruit. The palate is defined by the filigree tannins, supple and lithe in the mouth, ineffably harmonious with a sustained and energetic finish. It epitomises the brilliance of both Bachelet and this growing season. Tasted at Quality Chop House restaurant in London.
Anticipated maturity: 2019-2035
