Compelling Arguments

Chevillon, Coche-Dury, Lamy, Tempier and More

Hello Collectors,

On Saturdays we try to make our offers long form. It’s the weekend, so we hope you’re unwinding and have some time for a bit of light reading on what we assume is one of your favorite subjects – wine. Today’s offer is my version of a fireside chat, filled with many of my personal favorites, along with a few I wish I had more disposable income to own. Suffice it to say, these are the wines I’m most excited about right now.

Tempier, for me, is the epitome of Provence. I had the great pleasure of visiting in 2008, an experience that only supercharged my passion for a winery I already loved. No one else has quite captured the Mediterranean influence while pushing Mourvèdre to such heights—only Beaucastel’s Hommage à Jacques Perrin rivals it (at three to five times the price). I recently enjoyed an incredible bottle of 2000 Tourtine that struck the perfect balance between Burgundian finesse and Rhône darkness and earth. The Rosé is my house favorite, and I love cellaring a few away to see how it matures. These belong squarely in your drinking stash.

Staying in the Rhône, aged Jamet is a thing of beauty. I’ve had the great pleasure of drinking the glorious 1991 Côte-Rôtie in January of 2020, a wine I can still taste vividly in my memory. Côte Brune is a reminder of why Jamet belongs at the very top of the Northern Rhône pantheon.

There is no producer I own more of than Robert Chevillon. These are easily among the top five best bang-for-the-buck wines in Burgundy. They age effortlessly and deliver immense pleasure alongside transparent expressions of terroir. Vaucrains has always been my go-to, as it typically trades at a discount to Les St. Georges while offering 90–95% of the same experience. Speaking of value, Drouhin’s Clos des Mouches has long been another favorite in top vintages. These wines are just coming into their own, and all three under $200? Yes, please.

Venturing into the wines I’m simply thrilled to drink brings us to the spellbinding Hubert Lamy “Haute Densité” St.-Aubin – a wine of pure vineyard expression. With an eye-popping 28,000 vines per hectare (compared to the usual 10,000), the density creates an explosion of terroir in the glass, delivering remarkable precision and texture. This wine has no equal.

And speaking of wines without equal, Coche-Dury is truly magical. What they achieve with Bourgogne Blanc and Meursault Village is nothing short of stunning. These are often described as “humble wines” because of their origins, but there is nothing humble in the glass. They are singular, much like Soldera to Brunello or Rayas to Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

We close with La Tâche, a wine that, for me, checks every box. One sip can linger in my mind for a lifetime. Much like when Miles drank his 1961 Cheval Blanc, the moment becomes entirely about the wine itself – nothing else exists. As a reminder, no tariffs!
