Tracing a Legacy, Anticipating the Future

Through the history of wine, certain producers have become benchmarks for Italy’s top regions: Soldera in Montalcino, Gaja in Barbaresco, and Giacomo Conterno for Barolo – widely regarded as the pinnacle of the category. While Soldera and Gaja command significant price tags, Conterno offers a broader lineup, and every now and then, a true steal for the consumer.

Sadly, we have no Monfortino to offer – technically – but two of today’s wines contain declassified Monfortino juice. In both 2012 and 2018, no Monfortino was bottled, and the wine was instead blended into the Francia bottling. Considering these come at a fraction of the Monfortino price, they are absolute must-haves. Staying with the Monfortino theme, the Arione vineyard – acquired specifically to be incorporated into Monfortino – is represented here by its inaugural release, a bottle every Conterno collector should own. We round out the Barolo offerings with Cerretta, a newer bottling (Nebbiolo beginning in 2008–09, Barolo starting in 2010) from a cooler site that brings a striking contrast to the rest of the lineup while sacrificing none of the quality that defines Roberto Conterno’s skill and precision.

We close with a trio of Barbera vintages – a wine I buy every year – that make tremendous cellar defenders –  a wine you cellar not to age for decades, but to drink in the near-to-medium term so you don’t raid your prized bottles too early –  a delicious, ageworthy, reasonably priced wine that protects the rest of your cellar from premature consumption. Conterno’s Barberas can easily age 15–20 years (and benefit from at least 7–8) and reward patience with extraordinary depth. Finally, we feature Conterno’s other passion: the wines of Alto Piemonte, including the acclaimed Nervi project and the inaugural 2017 vintage.
