The End of A Burgundian Legacy

Hello Collectors,

It was late in 2012 when I received an email with my first allocation of these wines. I remember scratching my head and asking, “Why are these being allocated to me?” The reply was simple, and I’m sure accompanied by a smile I couldn’t see through the computer: “when you try one, you’ll know.” Sure enough, all these years later, I still snap up every bottle I can when the allocations come through.

 

The only problem? Didier Fornerol is retiring. While there’s a contingency plan in place to keep the brand alive, the sad truth is that I won’t see Didier’s face at tastings anymore. It was always such a joy to taste through his wines with him. I’d sit there with an inspired look on my face, knowing not only that I wanted every wine for whichever company I was with at the time, but also quietly plotting which bottles were coming home with me.

 

These wines may not have the marquee names like La Tâche or Richebourg, but they were never meant to be something they weren’t. They are humble, authentic, and massively underpriced for what they deliver. I recently opened some 2012 and 2013 Côte de Nuits-Villages, and not only were they delicious on release, but they’ve proven to have the structure and soul to last for decades—if you can keep your hands off them.
