The Glorious 2022s of Lignier Michelot

One of the long-time unsung heroes of Becky Wasserman and Company’s Burgundian portfolio has been Virgile Lignier. Though he initially had no intention of following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, he ultimately founded Domaine Lignier-Michelot in 1999, and it was a hit from the start. His wines have always carried the unmistakable signature of Morey-Saint-Denis, yet Virgile has carved out a style distinctly his own, a combination that has proven to be a winning formula. And don’t let the remarkably fair pricing fool you – these wines deliver at a genuinely high level.

From the earliest days, Virgile understood that the fruit they were working with was special. Even the Bourgogne Rouge is a serious wine, sourced from vines planted in the 1960s. In fact, most of the domaine’s holdings come from vines at least 50 years old, and many parcels are significantly older. His winemaking approach is straightforward, thoughtful, and focused on purity. The result: wines that are beautifully expressive in their youth but also structured enough to age gracefully.

The 2022s represent yet another exceptional set of wines from top to bottom, which is why we’re offering them with such enthusiasm. Allen Meadows echoed this sentiment with unusually high praise, noting: “Lignier has fully hit his stride as an accomplished winemaker. Yes, he has had any number of past successes, but his wines have been stellar for the last 5 or so vintages, and his 2022s will only burnish that reputation.
