The Quiet Power of Great Brunello

Outside of a few appearances from legends like Biondi Santi and Soldera, we rarely make much mention of Brunello di Montalcino. That’s not intentional – most collectors simply aren’t looking to offload Brunello, especially since so many examples remain relatively affordable and make excellent cellar defenders. At their best, however, Brunellos often draw comparisons to great Burgundy, and that is certainly the case with the producer we’re featuring today. Suffice it to say, we are very excited about this offer.

While Biondi Santi is credited with founding Brunello di Montalcino in 1888, the Padelletti family has been tending vineyards in Montalcino since 1571. For more than 500 years, they’ve been an integral part of the local community, with their original winery located within the town itself. Based in the northern part of the appellation, they work with just six hectares of vines, but the location is truly special. Surrounded by some of the zone’s most coveted neighbors, including Il Marroneto, Le Chiuse, and Salvioni (all recipients of perfect 100-point scores), they could hardly be better situated. With organically farmed vines ranging from 30 to 60 years of age, they are starting with exceptional raw material, exactly what great winemaking demands.

Today’s offer includes two of their most recent releases, highlighted by the 2019 Riserva. A gloriously elegant wine, it combines immediate appeal with the structure to age effortlessly for decades. Eric Guido of Vinous raved, noting, “The 2019 finishes with tremendous length while maintaining refinement and grace.” Also not to be missed is the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino, a wine of striking sophistication and a terrific achievement for the vintage.
