Limestone Magic:
The Mighty Monte Bello
Hello Collectors,
I am absolutely thrilled to send this email today. There is truly no other American Cabernet I would rather drink than Ridge Monte Bello. I have incredible memories of bottles I’ve enjoyed stretching back to the 1970s, and I continue to be inspired by every new vintage I open. Given the unparalleled quality and a price that remains remarkably reasonable, this is easily one of the smartest ways to spend your dollars on American Cabernet.
The key to Monte Bello is the vineyard itself, which sits atop decomposed limestone, widely considered the most important soil type in the wine world. Look at the greatest vineyards – Clos du Mesnil, Montrachet, or Romanée-Conti – and you’ll find limestone at their foundation. Another distinguishing factor for Monte Bello, especially compared with other American Cabernets, is the age of the vines that comprise the vast majority of the blend. Only estates such as MacDonald and Scarecrow (and a very small handful of others) can make a similar claim.
While we were fortunate to secure meaningful volume for today’s offer, we still expect a complete sellout. Every previous release has moved quickly, and we anticipate this will be no different. We work hard to secure as much Monte Bello as possible – it is never easy – and we do not know when the next allocation will arrive. If you love these wines as much as I do, I encourage you not to miss out.
