A Vintage to Remember

While a look back at 2016 is registering as a pop-culture moment, for wine collectors it signifies something far more enduring. While we don’t usually chase trends, we fully support another Cubs championship, and we think a look back at the 2016 vintage is worth some well-placed reminiscing!

In Bordeaux, 2016 delivered a textbook vintage, producing an exceptional concentration of 100-point and near-perfect wines. Following the highly successful 2015, the year combined ideal growing conditions with precision and balance, drawing inevitable comparisons to 2009 and 2010.  2016 stands as a compelling candidate for vintage of the century so far. The Mouton and Pavie are the headliners, but the large formats of Malescot St. Exupéry are just now coming around and will have 2+ decades of life left.

California enjoyed ideal weather throughout the growing season, yielding balanced and expressive wines. Our offerings include Bond, Joseph Phelps Insignia, Ridge Monte Bello, Scarecrow, Schrader, Philip Togni, Realm and more – the number of perfect scores and star power here reminds me how monumental this vintage was. The Rhône and Champagne also shone, with near-perfect Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage, 100-point Clos Saint Jean Deus Ex-Machina, Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle, and shockingly affordable Perrin Gigondas showcasing the power and elegance of the vintage.

Smaller treasures like Doyard’s bracing Voie d’Oger, the wildly well-reviewed and well-priced L’Aventure Les Demoiselles, and Bruyere Renaud & Houillon Adeline’s beautiful site-specific Arbois selections round out a globally remarkable year.
