The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a very pure bouquet of maraschino cherries, blueberry, white pepper and subtle undergrowth aromas. This is quintessential Chambolle more succinct than Camille Giroud s Les Borniques. The palate is medium-bodied and succulent, but it doesn’t quite deliver the panache that is exhibited aromatically. High-toned and a little honeyed in texture, it requires a bit more tension on the structured finish. I suspect it will improve with bottle age, though there are better Chambolle Premier Crus this vintage. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
Anticipated maturity: 2026-2044
The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras is similarly compelling, soaring from the glass with aromas of red berries, exotic spices, orange rind, musk and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and tightly wound, with a deep and vibrant core of fruit that’s framed by fine, powdery tannins, it concludes with a long, penetrating and intensely mineral finish. This is a magical Chambolle-Musigny worth a special effort to seek out.
Anticipated maturity: 2029-2060
