The 2017 Ermitage Ex Voto is sturdy, rich and intense, even for Hermitage. Crushed stone and plum notes mark the nose, while the full-bodied palate is tannic and dusty in feel, ending on additional notes of crushed stone, pencil shavings and cassis. Opaque purple. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes smoky, mineral-accented red and dark berry preserves, licorice, pipe tobacco hints of olive and pungent flowers that build quickly in the glass. Juicy and weighty in the mouth, offering almost shockingly energetic, spice-tinged black raspberry, boysenberry, fruitcake and violet pastille flavors that become sweeter and livelier with air. The floral and mineral notes resonate through the finish, which shows outstanding tenacity and gently gripping tannins. Note that this bottling was not produced in the 2016 vintage.
