There’s only one barrel of the 2016 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes, but it’s one of the highlights of the range this year, unfurling in the glass with complex aromas of lemon and lime zest, pastry cream, iodine and smoky reduction. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, deep and complete, with a beautifully satiny texture and superb balance. It’s not a powerful Chenevottes, but it’s supremely elegant.
(just one 350-liter barrel made, vs. a normal six): Pale bright yellow. Pungent scents of fresh herbs, white pepper, chlorophyll, anise and fennel. Nicely dense and intense but tightly wound, with its citrus and nectarine flavors conveying an impression of strong dry extract. Firmly structured and a bit youthfully aggressive. The savory, slightly bitter, palate-dusting finish is slightly hard-edged today, partly owing to the carbonic gas. Will this wine soften during its remaining months of élevage?
