With penetrating intensity, fresh apple and pineapple deliver tangy brightness both to the nose and to a palate where a glaze of quince jelly and an oily abundance of glycerol reflect advanced ripeness and incipient botrytization. Brightness and penetration persist through a buoyant, lusciously fruited finish that permits satisfying glimpses of wet stone and invigoratingly gingery, zesty nuances. “The fact that Goldgrube always ripens much later than Steffensberg contributes to the [former’s] complexity,” opined Vollenweider.
Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035
The 2015 Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Spätlese has a deep, clear and flinty/herbal, beautifully fine but also super ripe and aromatic bouquet. Round and lush on the palate, this is a generous and well balanced Spätlese with a smooth and piquant mouthfeel, remarkable elegance and great finesse. The finish is stimulatingly salty and fresh. I’d keep the wine in my cellar for another eight years and enjoy it for the rest of my life.
Anticipated maturity: 2025-2045
