Philip Togni’s Ca Togni label is a fun break from the Napa norm. A sweet red wine made from Black Muscat/Muscat of Hamburg, the rich, concentrated 2015 Ca Togni has a whopping 385 grams per liter of residual sugar. Sporting a medium to deep garnet color, the nose explodes with a fantastic perfume of Welch’s Grape Juice, raisin cake, rose oil and plum pudding scents with suggestions of fallen leaves and preserved dates. The palate is thick with a beautifully viscous texture, laden with sweet, fragrant layers and a lovely backbone of freshness to balance. The finish is just epic. I don’t think the aging potential here is huge since its youthful perfume is really its selling point, but I would safely say it can withstand 6-8 years in the cellar and still be drop-dead gorgeous. Produced in minuscule quantities, only 28 cases (consisting of 12 half bottles per case) were made.
Anticipated maturity: 2021-2029
A fleshy deep, wine, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exudes richness and sheer exotic beauty from the very first taste. As always, the Togni wines need bottle age to be at their best. In 2015, time will mostly help the aromatics develop, as the tannins are quite soft for such a young wine. Expressive floral and savory notes develop with time in the glass, but the 2015 is years away from hitting its stride. It will be interesting to see where the 2015 goes in the coming years and decades. Sadly, yields are down a whopping 50%.
Anticipated maturity: 2023-2040
