The 2015 Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes across as very oaky on the nose and unfortunately this is masking the fruit expression and terroir. There is also a haze of SO2, although this lifts with aeration to reveal enticing flint and Granny Smith apple scents. The palate is rounded and lightly honeyed on the entry, displaying moderate depth and concentration. At first it feels sultry and lacks energy; however, it develops more precision and race with time in the glass. The winemaking recedes, the terroir takes over and blow me down! – a great Batard-Montrachet rises phoenix-like from the SO2. Give this a long decant or, preferably, cellar it for several years. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
Anticipated maturity: 2023-2040
