Healthy medium red. Pure, reticent aromas of kirsch, licorice and calcaire minerality; less expressive in the early going than the Veroilles or FuĂ©es. Then hugely concentrated and compellingly sweet in the mouth, but with outstanding sappy energy to the flavors of black raspberry, minerals and peach pit. Offers a near-perfect balance between flesh and mineral energy. Finishes with outstanding tactile persistence and a complicating saline quality, the tannins perfectly supported by the wine’s strong extract.
Anticipated maturity: 2023-2036
Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras from Ghislaine-Barthod has a strange nose, overly floral with slight geranium scents that seems to dissipate with time. It is a mercurial nose, one frustratingly difficult to pin down. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin. I find this just a little monotone compared to its peers and lacking detail on the finish. I strongly suspect that there are much better bottles than this.
Anticipated maturity: 2015-2015
