(14.7% alcohol; from old Clone 7 vines): Full ruby-red. Crushed blueberry, crushed rock and violet complemented by menthol and pepper. Dense, rich and lush, with an intriguing saline quality to the dark berry, mineral and bitter chocolate flavors. Rich, broad and deep but youthfully closed now, finishing with a powerful tannic spine that will require at least several years of cellaring. Outstanding potential here.
A new addition to the lineup, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon The Three Kings is intense, dark and powerful. Tar, scorched earth, incense and licorice are some of the notes that inform this brooding, inward Cabernet. The 2010 Three Kings doesn’t appear to have the pedigree of the very best Carter wines, but it is gorgeous just the same. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030. I was deeply impressed with these new releases from Mark Carter and his winemaker, Mike Smith, this year. Tel. (707) 445-0311
