(this spent 31 months in oak): Medium red color seemed to deepen with aeration. Redcurrant, plum, spices and earth on the nose, complicated by grilled herbs and exotic flowers. Plush, sexy and deep, with layered flavors of strawberry, marzipan and dried flowers. Offers an exciting combination of breadth with fresh acidity. The very long finish features a wave of dusty ripe tannins. From a vineyard dating back to 1937, with an average vine age of 65 years, according to Conterno. The deepest of these 2009s.
The 2009 Barolo Romirasco is an incredibly rich and powerful wine and by far the most elaborate of the bunch. Those oak-driven notes of spice and toasted nut will require many more years of bottle aging until they fully integrate, but the wine certainly shows the girth and consistency to bring it forward over time. Lingering notes of mocha, espresso, cola, dark spice, plum and dried blackberries complete the finish. Don’t even think of opening this bottle anytime soon. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040.
