The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru comes across a bit staid on the nose, missing the joie-de-vivre of other vintages, quite tarry, in fact. The palate is oaky and chewy; this muscular CSJ needs more finesse. There is impressive density, yet it requires more mineralite and terroir expression. Tasted at the Southwold Burgundy dinner at Hatched restaurant.
Anticipated maturity: 2023-2033
The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques is a silky, elegant wine. Crushed flowers, berries and sweet spices are woven together in a fabric of inimitable class. This is an understated, slightly ethereal Burgundy that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. The finish is round and harmonious. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
