(tasted from barrel; the wine was scheduled to be racked the week after my visit) Restrained nose hints at candied citrus peel, flowers, vanilla and smoky lees. On the palate, lovely sweetness is perfectly buffered by ripe acidity, but this is very backward and minerally wine-more Perrieres-like than most other growers’ Perrieres. Taut and uncompromising, and less showy than the Genevrieres.
Tasted at the Domaine. This is quite taciturn on the nose, touches of yellow flowers, pine-cones, limestone and acacia honey. But the palate shows how successful Dominique Lafon was in 2007: vibrant, brilliant definition, surfeit with nervosite and mineralite and exuding Meursault-like character – this just could not be anything but. A hint of quince towards the finish and lingering long in the mouth. Top-drawer. Drink 2012-2030. Tasted November 2008.
Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030
