The 2006 Montrose, which Jean-Bernard Delmas made after the Bouygues family bought the estate and appointed him, has a conservative nose of blackberry, briar and just a faint menthol note like ’06 Calon Segur – well defined if missing a bit of flair. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp acidity and commendable grip. Fresh and, again, a little menthole in style, it has a little more succulence towards the finish. Still, it remains a conservative, a slightly more austere Montrose vis-a-vis other vintages, so not as memorable as the best.
Anticipated maturity: 2026-2040
Tasted at Bordeaux Index’s annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Chateau Montrose is a difficult wine on which to get a handle. It seems very distant and for want of a better word, unlovable on the nose, which lacks the usual depth and conviction. Lightweight? The palate is medium-bodied with rustic, rather dry tannin, mealy in the mouth and surprisingly loose-knit towards the finish. This is a disappointing Saint Estephe for the vintage – a Montrose that just never seemed to hear the starting gun. Can’t win ’em all the time. Tasted January 2016.
