Dark red-ruby. Superripe but vibrant aromas of redcurrant, mocha, minerals and tobacco. Sweet, silky and seamless but not thick, thanks to a medicinal menthol quality that lifts the dark fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. Starting with the Matriarch, this wine is the easiest to drink young. Dark plum/purple, with plenty of smoke, black currants, espresso roast, oak, and chocolate, the 2006 is dense, round, and best drunk over the next decade. [Robert Parker, 12/01/2009]
