The 2005 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru is both bold and expressive on the nose with black fruit, pressed iris flowers and a hint of iodine. I appreciate the delineation, not to mention the complexity that emerges after 30 minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, quite structured as most 2005s have remained, but it is redeemed by a wonderful line of acidity. Perhaps I would have preferred more flesh towards the saline finish but that might develop with time. One for the patient. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte.
Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040
Like many other 2005’s, this is closed on the nose at first and demands coaxing from the glass. Typically of Gouges, there is a definable stalkiness on the nose, complemented with Morello and a touch of yeast. The palate is succulent and supple with a touch of green bell pepper, spice and cooked meats. A complex wine, unorthodox for the vintage but it certainly has a engaging, cerebral quality to it. Perhaps a little linear, for similar to the barrel tasting it just lacks punch on the finish. Still a very fine Nuits. Drink 2013-2025. Tasted February 2008.
Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025
