The 2004 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru from the late Anne-Claude Leflaive was drinking beautifully. It has a no-nonsense, flinty bouquet that is so typical of the domaine. You can just feel those minerals, the quintessential “liquid stone” aromas. The palate is energetic and vibrant, with a killer line of acidity that marries beautifully with the shimmering citric fruit, furnished with subtle tangerine and white peach notes on the long and persistent finish. Outstanding. Tasted November 2016.
Anticipated maturity: 2017-2037
(bottled three weeks before my visit) Enticing nose offers lemon peel and wet and powdered stone. Wonderfully sweet but firm, with perfectly integrated acidity enlivening the flavors of crystallized lemon peel, stone and minerals. Wonderfully perfumed and aromatic in the mouth, and quite light on its feet despite its obvious density of material. Finishes very subtle and extremely long, with superb cut. This is actually lower in acidity in 2004 than the estate’s Batard.
