A slightly deeper hue than the Costa Russi, this has more intensity on the nose with macerated black cherries, a touch of leather, sloes, dark honey and dried orange peel. Complex and cerebral. The palate is medium-bodied, again with very fine tannins, symmetrical with superb poise and harmony. Grippy finish with layers of pure black cherries, raspberry liqueur and a touch of creme de menthe. Wonderful length and precision. My personal favourite of Gaja’s Barbarescos. Drink 2015-2025. Tasted October 2008.
Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025
The 2003 Sorì San Lorenzo is simply awesome. Boasting the darkest color of these wines as well as captivating aromatics, it is a brooding effort packed with notes of earthiness, tar, smoke, grilled herbs, cassis, licorice and super-ripe plummy fruit. It shows the qualities of 2003 in its full-throttle, expansive style yet it also possesses remarkable balance as well as fine tannins for the vintage. Although there is a little heat on the finish, I found this an utterly compelling wine.
