(14.1% alcohol): Bright ruby-red. Aromas of dark berries, menthol and black pepper along with mint and herb elements; smells fresh but a bit thin. Then surprisingly fine-grained on the palate, showing good energy to the flavors of dark berries, licorice and spices. Still, there’s not quite enough mid-palate stuffing to support the substantial dusty tannins. Finishes with a slightly high-toned suggestion of adhesive tape.
Anticipated maturity: 2017-2022
The outstanding 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from an extremely small crop, is an example of what the Napa Cabernet Sauvignon producers are jokingly saying is "another fine wine from a bad vintage." A rich, full-bodied, dense effort on a fast evolutionary track, the 1998 is loaded with chocolatey, black cherry, and cassis fruit, an open-knit, sexy, expansive texture, outstanding concentration and purity, low acidity, and a fat, chewy finish. It will be drinkable upon release, yet promises to age well for 12-15 years. (Not yet released) Tel. (707) 963-8339; Fax (707) 963-0232
