Tasting Notes

Robert Parker 86

A surprisingly feeble garnet/ruby color already displaying pink and amber hues is followed by a Medoc-like bouquet of cedar, plums, cherries, and spice box with hints of sweet oak as well as roasted peanuts. The wine is light to medium-bodied, with fine balance but a short finish. This fully mature 1998 requires consumption over the next 5-8 years. If the Bordelais can significantly drop prices, recognizing the inherent weaknesses in the international marketplace as well as the overall quality of the wines, why can’t California wine producers do the same, especially when this vintage is considerably inferior to 1997 and 1996? Vinous 93

Next to the 1997, the 1998 Opus One is naturally a bit slender, but it, too, boasts striking balance. Savory herbs, mint, licorice and plums are woven together in a fabric of notable class. Still young and vibrant, the 1998 is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next decade. The focus, length and persistence are all super-impressive, especially within the context of a challenging vintage. The 1998 is 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 1% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot. [Antonio Galloni, 06/01/2013]

Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023
