Tasting Notes

Robert Parker 89

Tasted at the Denis Mortet Chambertin vertical, the 1996 Chambertin Grand Cru is one of Mortet’s better wines from the decade. It has a slightly meaty, dried blood-tinged bouquet that is very savory, hints of bacon fat becoming more and more prominent as it opens. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity, truffle tones coming through with time, though the finish is resolutely obdurate and slightly austere. Not bad, but not lovable either. Tasted January 2016. [Neal Martin, 02/02/2016]

Anticipated maturity: 2016-2022

Vinous 93+

Deep ruby-red. Explosive, superripe nose of black raspberry, iron, smoked meat and roasted coffee. Thick, sweet and velvety, but currently offers more texture than flavor. This is quite unforthcoming in the middle palate. But extremely long on the finish, with fine grained tannins thoroughly supported by extract. May ultimately prove to be richer and finer than Mortet’s very strong ’95. [Stephen Tanzer, 01/03/1999]
