Tasting Notes

Robert Parker 93

The 1996 exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color that is just beginning to lighten at the edge, surprisingly velvety tannins and a classic Pauillac bouquet of lead pencil shavings, cedarwood, black currants, sweet cherries and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, elegant, savory, broad wine is still five years away from full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years. [Robert M. Parker, Jr., 08/31/2011]

Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025

Vinous 89

The 1996 Lynch-Bages is showing some bricking on the rim. It seems fully mature on the nose with blurred red fruit, autumn leaves and undergrowth. A light ferrous scent emerges with time, later a touch of eucalyptus. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a little dry and austere, and fine acidity, but I feel this needs more fruit in the second half. Brown spices and tobacco dominate the finish, which lacks a bit of length and flesh. Tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical at the chateau and also sighted from double-magnum. Anticipated maturity: 2021-2032
