Tasting Notes

Robert Parker 96

The most famous Beau-Sejour Duffau-Lagarosse thanks to a perfect score courtesy of Mr. Parker, so I have been itching to taste this wine for many years. Whilst I would not ordain it with a ton, it is undoubtedly a stunning Saint Emilion. What I did not anticipate was how beautifully balanced and refined this particular bottle was showing after 17-years of age. Reticent at first, a pure perfume of cherry, roasted herbs, a touch of chestnut and autumnal garden bonfire emerge. It could almost be from the Left Bank! The palate is medium- rather than full-bodied, very complex and refined with excellent acidity. Cherry, cranberry, a touch of fig and espresso. There is an earthy element, probably from the Cabernet Franc which becomes more pronounced with aeration. Very natural and harmonious on the finish. Drink now-2035. Tasted May 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2035

Vinous 91

Deep ruby to the rim. Extravagant aromas of black fruits, violets, and toffee. Voluptuous and sweet; this has outstanding concentration but with so much baby fat there’s little delineation on the palate. Finishes with a kick of alcohol and substantial ripe tannins. Very dense, but while a flight of other top right-bank wines were sending off fireworks in the glass, this chunky wine sat like a lump of coal. [Stephen Tanzer, 01/11/1993]
