Tasting Notes

Vinous 96

Tasted numerous times, the 1985 Chateau Margaux probably doesn’t deserve to follow the 1982 and 1983 and should be considered in its own right. Sensual and pure on the nose, this offers gorgeous, pixelated red fruit blossoming in the glass with inkwell and violet hints. The palate is lace-like, refined and embroidered with a very fine thread of acidity. Almost straight-laced in the beginning, there is a peacock’s tail on the finish that leaves you with a stupid grin on your face. Tasted at Medlar restaurant dinner celebrating the release of "The Complete Bordeaux". [Neal Martin, 26/09/2023]

Robert Parker 96

Tasted at the Claret Club -85 Dinner at -The Square-. Chateau Margaux remains one of the most compelling, indeed most delicious First Growths. Deeper in colour than its peers, there bouquet is vibrant and vivacious with succulent red fruits, date, a touch of iodine and violets and as before, further aeration reveals those classic pencil lead aromas. The palate is exquisitely balanced, focused and powerful and yet brilliant defined with a sublime talcum finish, a hint of exotic fruit on the finish. Divine. Drink now-2025+ Tasted December 2009.
