Hitting All the Right Notes
Hello Collectors,
These days, with more global attention than ever on Burgundy, it’s much easier for small, up-and-coming producers to be discovered. And whether you do so independently or you hear the good word via other means (such as Cellar Trading), it always feels good to find a “hidden gem.” I remember the first time I tasted Thomas Pico’s Chablis wines from his Pattes Loup label. I bought—and subsequently sold—every box I could get my hands on, which was a full 80 cases. Alas, since word has gotten around about these stellar wines, allocations are doled out by the bottle, rather than the case. Today, we’re offering you a chance to discover an exciting Burgundy producer we’re predicting will go the same route.
David Moreau’s winemaking career really could not have started any better. With arguably the best training on Earth—at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Hubert Lamy—it was only a matter of time before his name ended up on labels. When David struck off on his own in 2009, with a mere 5 hectares of humble Santenay vineyard, it was a stark contrast to the legendary crus he worked with in his early career. He set out to make the greatest wines possible from this unpretentious appellation… much like another superstar of Burgundian values, Sylvain Pataille.
After a decade of building the brand and arranging all the pieces, it appears that the 2020 vintage is when everything came together for Moreau. He has absolutely found his voice in Santenay, producing wines that are by turns compelling and beguiling. Their aromatics are incredible—so much so that we almost forgot to drink them in a recent tasting. Greatly enjoyable now, they also have ample stuffing to last—and evolve—for well over a decade. And that’s a perfect combo for keeping your cellar stocked with some of the best weekday drinkers you’ll come across from Burgundy. You’ll thank us later!
