Highly Collectable
Hello Collectors,
It goes without question that the price of the top tier Burgundy and Champagne have changed to the more expensive, and in some cases to quite a high margin. This fact notwithstanding, painting it all as “too pricey” is quite an oversimplification. I probably don’t spend enough time paring down the lists to more affordable gems like we did today, but highlighting the best values from the top producers is just as important as highlighting the top producers alone. For those looking for highly collectable wines without breaking the bank, we’ve made your shopping much easier today.
I’m sure we all yearn for Richebourg at a modest price level, but since none of us have a time-traveling Delorean it’s best we focus on what can actually put in our cellars. Producers like Gouges and Chevillon haved shaped and defined the best of Nuits St. Georges and have no shortage of suitors thanks to their incredible age worthiness and wallet-friendly price tags. Similarly, D’angerville and Lafarge defined not only the best vineyards, but the best parcels of those vineyards to craft their masterpieces. A long legacy of top winemakers has gone a long way in paving the history for Comte Armand, and their Clos des Epeneaux is the pinnacle of Pommard greatness. The next to define his region? Sylvain Pataille, who’s work in some of the greatest vineyards in all of Burgundy (including those of Roumier) has been brought to his own humble vineyards that will simply shock you with how good they are. These wines have a strong presence in my own cellar for that very reason.
Venturing outside of the Cote D’or, you can still find Champagne from prominent houses like Taittinger for fantastic prices. And while the small, cult producers of Champagne seemingly have shot up faster than most Burgundy, Savart is still producing precise, full character Champagne at well south of $100 a bottle. Even further out, we’ve got a new release from Clos des Papes: coming in on the coattails of a super successful 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape release, we’re thrilled to offer the 2022 today, which just earned a possible 99 point score from Wine Advocate. These bottles are sure to move at this price, so be sure you act quickly!
