Power, Beauty, Terroir
Hello Collectors,
For over three decades now, Colgin Cellars has been at the very top of Napa producers, both figuratively and literally. Situated high above the Valley, their estate remains the jewel of Pritchard Hill, where the vast majority of their fruit is grown. In fact, for nearly a decade now, the only purchased grapes they use come from the famed Herb Lamb Vineyard. And while this legendary winery—one of the original “cult” brands—has secured its place among the world’s elite estates, they refuse to rest on their laurels. Thanks to dedicated leadership, one of Napa’s most talented winemakers, and extraordinary terroir, their wines only keep getting better.
Founder Ann Colgin made all the right choices from the start, and for all the praise she’s rightfully received, her development of vineyards on Pritchard Hill really isn’t talked about enough. They are impeccably maintained parcels, with some of Napa’s best views and winemaking terroir to match. The rocky soils give the wines a touch of character reminiscent of Pessac-Léognan, helping to distinguish them from other Napa Cabernets.
With those pieces in place, it should be no surprise that once Allison Tauziet joined the winemaking team in 2005 (becoming Winemaker just two years later), things really clicked for the already-successful Colgin. I had the immense pleasure of drinking a 2007 IX Estate last summer, and it was not only sublime, but a clear testament to Tauziet’s exceptional talent from the beginning of her tenure. Frankly, it ranks among the greatest California wines I’ve ever had. Almost unbelievably, her more recent wines are even better, and I can’t wait to try them when they too have put on 15+ years of age. And for the impatient, no need to fear: Colgin’s wines drink beautifully on the younger side as well, albeit with appropriate decanting.
