Hello Collectors,
It’s easy to overlook certain names in Napa Valley. When a winery becomes iconic, we sometimes forget why. But when you take a closer look at Quintessa, the depth of intention behind it is striking. From the beginning, this estate was built with care, patience, and a clear vision for greatness.
Start with the land: 280 acres of prime Rutherford bench on the east side of the appellation. Valerie Huneeus, co-founder and trained microbiologist, immediately implemented organic farming practices long before it was fashionable. Then consider the talent they assembled. Jean-Claude Berrouet, who spent more than 40 years at Petrus, helped shape the early vision. A young Aaron Pott brought energy and precision at a pivotal moment in Napa’s rise. When he moved on, Charles Thomas (maker of the first 12 vintages of Opus One and countless vintages of Robert Mondavi Reserve) stepped in. Michel Rolland followed, refining the wines and helping position Quintessa alongside its Oakville rival, Opus One.
Today, winemaker Rebekah Wineburg, mentored by Celia Welch of Scarecrow, is building on that foundation and, in my view, producing the finest wines in the estate’s history.
Today we’re pleased to offer winery-direct library release 2015 Quintessa magnums that I recently had the opportunity to taste. They are drinking beautifully right now, with the depth and composure you’d expect from Rutherford at its best. Pair that with the youthful, exciting, and incredibly well-priced Illumination Sauvignon Blanc, and you have a compelling snapshot of what this iconic Napa estate continues to achieve.
