Spotlight on Cathy Corison

Napa Cabernet Built to Last

Hello Collectors,

Cathy Corison has never made wine to follow the moment, and that is exactly why her Cabernets continue to matter. Long before restraint and balance came back into fashion, Corison was quietly proving that Napa Cabernet could be profoundly elegant and extremely age worthy. She is truly a Napa legend, and her wines continue to set the standard for graceful and refined California Cabernet. For nearly five decades she has crafted wines that remain benchmarks for the region while somehow still flying a bit under the radar, with pricing that feels almost modest for the quality. Corison is the producer I continue to recommend to anyone who wants to understand what “classic” Napa Cabernet really means: balanced yet with that distinct Napa power, built to age, yet elegant vintage to vintage.

Having stayed true to her original vision of wines with a sense of specific place spanning decades, it’s no wonder the Corison name is spoken with such reverence among the cognoscenti, and the winery continues to be a small, family-run operation, with Cathy’s daughters now taking an active role in winemaking and operations. Production remains small and primarily mailing list based, ensuring their collectability. The wines have never chased ripeness or scale, yet they deliver remarkable depth, clarity, and persistence. Time has been kind to this approach. Mature Corison Cabernets consistently outperform expectations, showing nuance and vitality when many peers have long since peaked.

In today’s offer, the Cabernet Sauvignons from 2012 through 2021 present a rare chance to see a decade of consistency across varied vintages. These wines evolve slowly and gracefully, gaining complexity over the years. Single vineyard bottlings from Kronos (named after the Greek Titan and god of time, representing both the very old vines, Cathy’s long search for an ideal cabernet site as well as its hefty ageability), and the historical Sunbasket represent two different styles: a more “serious” Kronos style complemented by the brighter, warmer-site and earlier approachable Sunbasket. And don’t miss the harmonic Selene (named after the Greek goddess of the moon)– it’s drinking well right now, a bit of a “softer” style than Kronos, and like all of Cathy Corison’s wines, absolutely built for the long haul.
