Piedmont, With Age

Piedmont holds particular appeal for us this time of year, as we start thinking about the richer dishes of fall that demand a terrific bottle of Nebbiolo. With producers including Bruno Giacosa, Giacomo Conterno, Giuseppe Mascarello, Cappellano, Gaja, Vietti and Aldo Conterno, we want to highlight our current holdings, almost all of which are in stock and ready to transfer to storage or ship.

It has become increasingly difficult to find Barolo and Barbaresco with meaningful age, especially bottles with excellent provenance, and there is plenty here for drinking now: 1989 Giacosa Falletto Riserva, 2008 Vajra Bricco delle Viole, 2009 Mascarello Monprivato, 2010 Sandrone Le Vigne and 2013 and 2014 Vietti, among others. At the same time, collectors can fill in younger vintages from some of Piedmont’s most sought-after producers and vineyards, including Conterno Cerretta, Cappellano Pie Franco, Mascarello Monprivato, Oddero Vignarionda and Vietti Brunate, Cerequio and Rocche di Castiglione.

A smart collector should not miss the Cappellano Pie Franco. Antonio Galloni calls the 2021 “sublime…among the most impressive wines of the year…what a wine.” In keeping with Baldo Cappellano’s wishes, Vinous does not assign numerical scores to the estate’s wines.
