The 2015 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvee Carnot" 1er Cru has a beautiful, enticing, engaging bouquet, featuring marvelously detailed red berry fruit laced with crushed stone and black truffle. The palate is very detailed and precise, with crisp acidity, an insistent grip, and blacker and sappier fruit emerging toward a finish that lingers in the mouth. This is more backward on the palate than the nose, so I would afford it three or four years in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
Anticipated maturity: 2022-2040
"The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets ""Ancienne Cuvee Carnot"" offers up a reserved bouquet of cherry, currant leaf, grilled squab and cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is fine-grained, medium-bodied and tight at the core, with a greater sense of completeness, cohesion and depth than Bouchard’s other domaine reds in the 2015 vintage. It’s still lacking the concentration and depth to score higher, but the raw materials here were clearly promising. If it’s merely closed, then my score will seem conservative."
Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035
