Maybe it’s the sub-zero weather here in the Midwest and along the East Coast, and the resultant daydreaming of California sunshine that inspired me to focus on three of our favorite Napa wineries. Each is distinct, each represents its own singular style and philosophy of Napa Cabernet, and we’ve recently added perfectly stored collections stacked with back-vintages of all three: Corison, Schrader, and Realm. What they share is simple: excellence, and a deep fidelity to the sites they call home.

Cathy Corison is truly a Napa legend. For nearly five decades she has crafted classical, elegant Cabernet, wines that remain benchmarks for the region while somehow still flying a bit under the radar, with pricing that feels almost modest for the quality. Corison is the producer I recommend to anyone who wants to understand what “classic” Napa Cabernet really means: balanced yet with that distinct Napa power, ageworthy, yet elegant vintage to vintage. Having stayed true to her original vision of a Napa cab with a sense of specific place spanning decades, it’s no wonder Cathy Corison’s name is spoken with such reverence among the cognoscenti, and the winery continues to be a small, family-run operation, with Cathy’s daughters now taking an active role in winemaking and operations.

Schrader Cellars, founded by Fred Schrader and crafted for decades by Thomas Rivers Brown, has come to embody the pinnacle of Napa site-specificity, especially with its now-iconic bottlings from Andy Beckstoffer’s famed To Kalon vineyard. These wines are instantly appealing yet built to reward patience. As one of Napa’s original “cult” producers, now entering its 25th vintage, Schrader continues to rack up accolades, and its mailing list remains one of the toughest to crack. I recommend Schrader to anyone seeking powerful yet balanced Cabernet, and to collectors fascinated by the unique imprint of each To Kalon parcel.

Realm, the youngest of the trio, though still rooted in an early-aughts origin story, began in a négociant model, sourcing top fruit throughout Napa before evolving into a producer of magnificent estate wines. Watching Realm’s ascent has been exciting: multiple bottlings that earn high scores, a loyal collector base, and a portfolio that now spans both standout single-vineyard wines and masterful blends. Realm is a case study in vision, persistence, and organic growth, and now stands among Napa’s most sought-after producers. With its diversity of styles, I recommend Realm to anyone who appreciates Napa’s power but also values finesse expressed across a range of sites – truly the full “realm” of what Napa has to offer.
